The story

A Movement 400 Years in the Making…

Background Story: Yusef Shakur had been contemplating a trip to Ghana over the last few years. After discussing the possibility with Kwaku Osei - the pair finally decided to make it a reality.

After discussing with his father, Kwaku arranged so that his father, himself, Yusef and his son could go mid-August 2019. However, upon sharing that this trip was going to happen several other people expressed interest and after thinking how they might enable that, major inspiration came forth.

The Bigger Picture: Inspired by Ghana’s Year of Return and the significance behind the commemoration of 400 years since the 1st slave ship arrived in Jamestown, VA, The Great Sankofa is an attempt to provide the same rich experience of “returning home” and reconnecting with one’s roots that Yusef seeks and expanding it to others.

This story is still being written, but the aim is to enable the African diaspora to reconnect with their homeland and their African brethren, ensuring that our shared next 400 years look wildly better than the last…
